Submission for Pre-Budget Consultations for the 2025 Federal Budget
|
|
|
The GTAA recently put in a federal pre-budget submission to the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance. The GTAA recommends the federal government take immediate action to help Toronto Pearson remain globally competitive, enhance passenger experience, and drive economic growth through Pearson’s LIFT program, through recommendations such as:
-
Transformative investments in Canada’s airport infrastructure through greater flexibility for airports to invest revenues in infrastructure. Freeing up capital for the airport to modernize our infrastructure, Toronto Pearson can become an even more significant driver of good jobs, investment, trade, and tourism, supporting Canada's economy and future prosperity.
-
Supporting airports in the green transition through greater financial incentives for the aviation industry to meet its net-zero objectives, including implementing the government’s Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) Roadmap.
-
Protecting Canada’s air space: There is currently a steady increase in high-rise buildings being developed adjacent to airports, which creates risks for pilots and aircraft. This presents a serious threat to safety of passengers and supply chains and must be mitigated by government through greater regulation.
-
Support for the Pearson Economic Zone Strategy: The Pearson Economic Zone, represents the largest concentration of manufacturing and transportation businesses in Canada. Toronto Pearson is working with its municipal and business community partners to ensure the Pearson Economic Zone's continued economic success and growth.
-
Recognizing Toronto Pearson as a major innovation hub: Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) should expand the Global Innovation Clusters program to include a top-up for creating a transportation-focused cluster, recognizing the role airports like Toronto Pearson are already playing in supporting new innovations like SAFs and AI.
-
Adopting digital tools to enhance passenger experience: Adopting digitization of work and student permits, embracing emerging and proven technologies for faster, safer, and more secure travel, and supporting investments in cybersecurity infrastructure for ports and airports are all crucial to enhancing the passenger experience.

Toronto Pearson celebrates first ever Airport Workers Day |
|
|
On June 26, Toronto Pearson was proud to celebrate the inaugural Airport Workers Day, a day dedicated to recognizing and honouring the individuals who form the backbone of Canada’s aviation sector. These workers play a pivotal role in providing passengers the best travel experience, keeping the nation connected and ensuring our economy thrives.
With projections showing more than 150 million passengers will travel through Canada’s airports this year alone, Airport Workers Day offers a meaningful opportunity to recognize the invaluable contributions of the more than 50,000 individuals who work in the Toronto Pearson community. Their passion and dedication are essential in building the airport of the future. |

Toronto Pearson conducts annual full-scale emergency exercise |
From June 8-9, Toronto Pearson successfully conducted a Full-Scale Security Exercise mandated by Transport Canada. This event involved simulating a bomb activation scenario in Terminal 1. A total of 375 participants took part, including Toronto Pearson staff, Air Canada, Pearson Fire and Emergency Services and Peel Regional Police among other community partners. Ensuring the health, safety, and security of everyone at Pearson is our highest priority. These exercises are critical for rehearsing our emergency plans and procedures, preparing us for any potential real-world incidents.
A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers and public participants who acted as injured (makeup-enhanced) and uninjured passengers. You play a vital role in maintaining the safety of our airport. |
There are more than airplanes flying at Pearson
|
Keeping everything with wings safe at the airport involves a lot of departments, including our wildlife management team. With one-third of our 4,600 acres covered by grass, flood plains and land leased for agricultural purposes, the presence of wildlife is only natural. You may sometimes notice our feathered friends find their way into the terminals. When this happens, our wildlife team uses ethical trapping to safely capture the birds and release them outdoors at a safe location. Learn more about our Healthy Environment Initiatives.

NRG Health Clinic Closure |
We regret to announce that NRG Health have ended their services at Toronto Pearson on June 30. We extend our gratitude to NRG Health for their collaboration and support of DrugSmart Pharmacy and the GTAA community. We are working diligently to find new health care providers to continue these services at Toronto Pearson. In the meantime, please consider alternative health services for your needs here.

How smart design made Pearson a world leader in accessibility |
Over the past few years, many changes have been made to Pearson’s buildings, including subtle changes like painted curb lines and new tactile signage. Collectively, these improvements represent a significant commitment to enhancing accessibility for our passengers and staff. The Rick Hansen Foundation has recently acknowledged these efforts by awarding Terminals 1 and 3 with the RHF Accessibility Certified Gold rating, making them two of only 112 buildings in Canada to receive this recognition. Take a look at some of the key changes here.

We are thrilled to announce that Toronto Pearson has been recognized in the “Outdoor & Billboards” category by the Print Awards, winning Second Place with our campaign: I Am Toronto Pearson. For forty years, the PRINT Awards have been a benchmark for the design industry. Since becoming a global competition in 2020, the 2024 PRINT Awards continues to highlight and celebrate diverse visual design. RAIC-Ready Program Update |
The Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC) is mandatory for many airport employees and is obtained after completing various training, education, and security clearance procedures. The time needed for candidates to meet these requirements can result in delays, particularly when workers are in high demand. Launching its first cohort on April 27, 2023, the RAIC-Ready Program had massive success. So far, we have successfully trained five cohorts, with over 100 candidates completing the program. Many of them received multiple job offers from airport employers, and currently, 85% of the graduates are employed at Toronto Pearson. |
Pearson Summer Street Team: It’s a wrap |
This summer was a busy one for the Pearson Summer Street Team, having participated in over 75 community events, such as farmers’ markets, ribfests, festivals, and community BBQs. Our Street Team engaged with nearly 10,000 of our neighbours, building new relationships and sharing information on both our history and future plans. We extend our thanks to our community partner, ACCES Employment for recruiting this year’s Street Team. Although we’re sad to see this year’s team go, we look forward to being back in the community with our team next year.

Celebrating National Indigenous Peoples Day |
On June 21, we commemorated National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) to honour and celebrate the unique heritage, diverse cultures, and outstanding contributions of Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island. In recognition of NIPD, our Apron tower was lit orange.
This year, we are proud to partner with the Native Canadian Centre Toronto (NCCT) and participate in a National Indigenous Peoples Day event that featured networking, storytelling, dance performances, and more. The NCCT’s mission and vision are to empower the Indigenous community in Toronto by providing programs that support their spiritual, emotional, physical and mental well-being and to nurture an inclusive environment where all people respect Indigenous knowledge. We are grateful to have celebrated with Indigenous community members and look forward to continuing our work year-round to take meaningful steps towards reconciliation.
