Most Vocal Medical Professionals

While the 118th Congress is only just beginning, a few medical professionals have been more vocal about medical-related issues than others. To uncover the most vocal doctors in congress, we used Quorum to scan social media posts, press releases, and floor statements made by legislators. These doctors have mentioned the word “healthcare” or “health care” the most (but they still trail behind Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), who has mentioned the terms 35 times this year):
  • Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-IN-8) - 23
  • Rep. Mike Burgess (R-TX-26) - 17
  • Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) - 14
  • Rep. Kim Schrier (D-WA-8) - 7
  • Sen. Roger "Doc" Marshall (R-KS) - 6
Rep. Bucshon also topped the list when we searched for mentions of “covid” or “vaccine.” The majority of Rep. Bucshon’s comments come from floor statements opposing vaccination requirements for foreign travelers and health care workers.
  • Rep. Larry Bucshon (R-IN-8) - 20
  • Sen. Roger "Doc" Marshall (R-KS) - 11

The Medical Professionals of the 118th Congress

The Medical Professionals of the 118th Congress

Congress is a representative body, and that representation goes far beyond geography. Yes, lawmakers represent their state or district. But their personal backgrounds often mean they represent far more.

For example, a lawmaker’s ethnicity can make them a voice for a minority community. The same can be said of religion. Or military experience. Or even their previous career. While a large percentage of lawmakers are lawyers, the rest come from various industries and backgrounds, from college professors to ordained ministers.

Healthcare is a big one, and one that can translate well to policymaking. Lawmakers who worked as doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, psychologists, and in other healthcare roles often understand policy changes at the operational level and have a unique perspective to  evaluate healthcare legislation.
