Challenge: How to Develop Strategic Oversight of Ervia’s Interactions with Policymakers
Ervia has always had to keep track of when elected representatives make contact with the company. As the commercial semi-state multi-utility company responsible for the delivery of Ireland’s national gas and water infrastructure and services, they receive upwards of 12,000 queries a year from elected officials, whether national or local, across Ervia’s business. They have a business-wide system in place to track all of those individual cases.
However, whenever they wanted to extract highlights from escalated interactions with elected representatives, it was a manual process to identify insights specifically relevant to the public affairs team. They also needed a platform that each team member could contribute to with Ervia’s team spread out across Ireland.
“We were keen to get a strategic view of our interactions with our elected representatives,” said David Kelly, Group Head of Customer Operations and Public Affairs. “So when we looked at Quorum, when we saw the additional functionality that it could bring, in addition to the strategic oversight that we could have - it was an obvious option."
Solution: A Platform Built for Public Affairs That Gathers Official Contact Information, Social Media, and Reporting Tools in One Place
In their search for a tool that could meet their needs, Ervia found
Quorum International, which combines a directory of officials, social media monitoring, and the tools you need for stakeholder engagement and reporting.
At the time Ervia started using Quorum, Ireland was in the middle of a general election, which meant a lot of the stakeholders they had engaged with were changing. The database of officials that Quorum provided helped them make that transition to the new parliamentary term seamless and effortless.
“We had an election in Ireland in 2020 and within a couple of weeks of the election being concluded we had a database populated with the latest elected representatives,” Kelly said. “Having a database with all of those contacts is really impressive."
So what was the “additional functionality” that Quorum provided that made it an obvious choice to Ervia’s team? Social media tracking across Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube of elected representatives and official organisations. [callout align="left" heading="“The single biggest reason I’d recommend Quorum is the level of strategic oversight that Quorum offers in the public affairs arena is second to none,” said Kelly. " button_text="Request a Demo" button_link="https://www.quorum.us/products/international/"] Custom alerts and advanced keyword searching across social media ensured that Ervia could examine their immediate policy space as well as what elected representatives were saying on any topic.
With the pandemic, Ervia’s crisis management team was meeting regularly to understand fast-moving political developments and how these could impact the business.
“It was really important that we were kept abreast of what political representatives were saying in real-time,” Kelly said. “We now have a tool that gives us a pinpoint strategic accuracy around the political system that we didn’t have before.”
Finding a
reporting tool that would give an overview of all the interactions that Ervia has with elected representatives - particularly for the escalated cases - meant adopting a system of logging interactions. Quorum’s interaction logger on desktop and on the mobile app makes recording meeting notes that much easier by having a comprehensive database of publicly available information on officials ready to use. Team members could focus on sharing insights rather than searching for contact information.
